The General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS), discovered by Dr Hans Selye, describes the process your body goes through when you are exposed to any kind of stress. It has three stages: alarm, resistance, and exhaustion. If you do not resolve the stressor(s) that triggered the GAS, it can lead to physical and mental health problems.
This is more complicated than it sounds. Why? A well-defined stressful event, such as a dog attacking you, will put you into the alarm stage, but usually, these types of situations are resolved quickly, and you will not enter the resistance stage very much.
